RNA Paddock to Palate Results

Australia's most comprehensive beef supply chain competition, the RNA's Paddock to Palate Competition culminated in a Beef Taste Off at the RNA Showgrounds, with winners announced at a presentation on Saturday 10 August.

Commencing in March, 483 steers were moved into Mort & Co's Grassdale Feedlot at Dalby for a 100-day feedlot contest to compete for best aggregate weight gain.

Winners in this class were:

Class 37A Best Weigh Gain for Pen of Six Grain-Fed Steers

1st           G Morgan & Co Cat. 22 - 2.75 kg/day

2nd          Riverglen Pastoral Co Cat.45 - 2.72 kg/day

3rd           G Morgan & Co Cat. 21- 2.71kg/day

4th           McNicholl Family Trust Cat. 39 - 2.70 kg/day

5th           Woolcott Shorthorns Cat. 61- 2.70kg /day

Following from this, the Carcase Competition took place at the Dinmore Abattoir where carcases were judged on fat colour, meat colour, marbling and fat distribution.   The winners of Class 37B were:

1st           Hinz Grazing Cat. 32 - 514 pts

2nd          Royalla Shorthorns Cat. 52 - 508 pts

3rd           Yulgibar Pastoral Co Cat. 67 - 505 pts

4th           Acton Land & Cattle Cat. 6 - 504 pts

5th           Yulgibar Pastoral Co Cat. 66 - 500 pts

Champion Carcase McNicholl Family Trust Cat. 40E - 93 pts

Reserve Champion Carcase Yulgibar Pastoral Co Cat. 67G - 93 pts

** Both of these carcases had the same ELMY, but carcase number 40E had a larger Eye Muscle**

Thirdly, the MSA Eating Quality Competition predicts eating quality of 40 muscles by six different cooking methods.   The MSA eating quality score is the average predicted MSA eating quality score of 11 major primal cuts.  Winners in Class 37C were:

5th           Hinz Grazing Cat. 32 - 1933.62 pts

The final stage of the competition the Beef Taste Off is a palate competition, where exhibitors are invited to nominate one animal from their pen to compete in the Beef Taste Off.  A selected cut is taken from each animal, cooked by a Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Food Scientist and tasted by a panel of judges.

1st           JW, AJ & WS Henning Cat. 37B - 795 pts

2nd          Royalla Shorthorns Cat. 53G - 779 pts

3rd           Consolidated Pastoral Co Cat. 14B - 773 pts

Taking all classes into account and tallying the results over the four stages, The Sturrock Trophy for the RNA Paddock to Palate overall winner was:
